TREATMENT

Maintenance Therapy

Maintenance therapy is treatment continued after the first phase has controlled the cancer, aiming to delay growth. It is used in specific cancers and regimens, not as a default extra. It may be a lower-intensity chemotherapy, a targeted drug, an immunotherapy, or a hormone medicine. The benefit and the burden are both discussed, because staying on treatment has side effects and does not guarantee that the cancer will remain controlled.

Questions worth asking

  • What is this phase trying to achieve?
  • How long is it usually continued?
  • What side effects should change the plan?
  • What happens if we stop and watch instead?

What it is not

Maintenance therapy is not a promise that cancer will stay away. It is also not the same as palliative care, though both can be part of life with cancer. The decision belongs in a consultation that has the scans and the response to earlier treatment.

Questions about this topic

Does everyone need maintenance treatment?

No. Many treatment plans end after a set number of cycles, followed by observation. Maintenance is added only when evidence and the individual situation support it.
